In Class: Hearing Your Bias

Prior knowledge

none

Objectives:

After having completed this assignment, students should:

  • Understand that biases can be physical and cognitive

Steps

  • Play the audio clip ask learners to share which word they heard -- 'Laurel' or 'Yanny' -- while listening to the audio clip.
  • After sharing who heard which word, use a clip that allows students to hear both words.
  • Discuss with students how biases like these may impact how media content is experienced differently and how this can impact how audiences understand journalistic content.

Teacher’s Note:

  • Students can simply raise their hands to indicate which word they heard or use a program like Kahoot or Mentimetor.
