Key Lesson

How to evaluate a news source based on the information they gave and the relevance of their authority

Level

Prior Knowledge

News sources

Prior knowledge

Objectives:

After having completed this assignment, students should:

  • Identify the sources of information in a news story
  • Consider the relationship between the information a source gives and the person who gives it
  • Understand how the student’s lived experience influences their assessment of quality
  • Imagine how others with different lived experiences might evaluate sources differently

Steps

  • Find a news story with a variety of sources who help construct the story
  • Explain to students that they should read through the story and then go back through and list all sources along with the information they provide in the table below. Each time a source is mentioned they should be added in a new row with the information in that instance.
  • After listing each source and pieces of information, students should rate the quality of the source on a scale of 1-5 using A NICE source.
  • After rating all sources, students should answers the reflection questions of the second page of the worksheet.

Teachers’s Note:

  • It is helpful for students to share their results with others in class and compare their evaluations. This helps reveal how differences in world views influence the degree to which news consumers trust a source and, by extension, a news story.
